Preparation for the crossing of the Gulf of Carpentaria

The crossing from Seisia at the top of the Cape York Peninsula, Queensland to Gove in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory is approximately 358 nautical miles. For preparation for this crossing I have fitted the storm sail to the 3rd furler on Caree. Although I hope we don’t need to use it, everything is set up ready to go. All the sheet lines, halyards and reefing lines lead back to the cockpit on Caree reducing the need for anyone to go out onto the deck.

Communications also are getting an upgrade with the fitting of a MF/HF SSB radio. These radios are capable of receiving and transmitting thousands of kilometres. We will use this to chat to other boats in the area and received both the voice and weather fax broadcasts from the Bureau of Meteorology. The fax broadcasts will be decoded using a Android tablet or phone.

We also have a Garmin InReach satellite communicator capable of receiving hourly weather forecasts for any area required as well as sending and receiving text messages.
